what matters most is
1) change the channel from the default channel 6
your neighbour’s wireless router signals will drift in amazing distances all of the sudden. You will have a good signal but no internet ( common problem here) Change the channel from channel 6 to whatever. Channels 1 and 11 are best
2) change the ssid ( name of wireless network even by adding digit dlink and smc are the word default , linksys is linksys
3) the router should be high and not cluittered
– metal doors , filing cabinets etc etc in line of sight
one idiot I knew – kirk- kept complaining wireless worked upstaris but not on main floor
he was getting his neigbours linksys router on the 2nd floor
his rotuer was in the basement , in a furnace room ( furnace , pipes, full metal filing cabinet) and under a thick heavy metal office desk

two recommendations
– you will end up with a standard g router
even the older b models ( g is a souped up b) are way faster than any internet connection. The g is good if you are transferring files between the comptuters
speed drops off like a rock after 30 feet
– if you have vista you may have to buy a new n model for the drivers to install
– also any of these gigantic speed routers have to be matched with the same propietary hardware from the same maker

– for my money get an older linksys wrt54g and apply the 3ed party firmware
the product is now sold by linksys as the wrt54GL

Movies, no. Songs, yes. There were a number of prosecutions between 2005-9, usually resulting in absurdly stiff fines for the individuals involved. A kid in Chicago was fined half a million dollars.

It’s been a public relations disaster for the RIAA. Issues of right and wrong aside, it’s difficult to get public opinion on your side when you send six $1,000 an hour lawyers to prosecute a 16 year old Dairy Queen employee for making a CD of songs he likes. Recently, Comcast and Time Warner (and many other service providers) have basically told the RIAA that they don’t want to keep monitoring their customers and sneding Cease and Desist letters to them. Also, most studies have shown that torrent downloading is usually done by the very people most likely to spend money on the industry, so they are essentially suing and badgering their own customers.

Hopefully this nonsense will end soon and it will all be legal in a few years.
