Your Questions About Direct Tv

Mark asks…

DIRECT TV: How good is the Internet compared to Comcast?

We currently have comcast and we are thinking of switching to Direct TV with the TV+Internet+Calling bundle, and I was wondering how it compares to comcast in terms of the Internet? How fast is it?

Nagesh answers:

DirecTV is a satellite TV service. I don’t know what they use for internet and phone, but hopefully it’s not via satellite. The latencies involved in broadband over satellite links make it a bad choice. A simple ping to a website will take about 500 milliseconds to be acknowledged. Ground-based systems take 10 to 40 milliseconds.

You should separate your service needs and choose the best provider for each. Don’t get talked into a “Triple-play” just because they have one. Unless you make a huge number of long-distance phone calls, you’ll most likely be overpaying for phone.

I’d recommend Dish for TV, Comcast or your local phone company’s DSL for internet, your local phone company for local telephone, and a 3rd party service for long-distance. Pioneer or AireSpring have very cheap and reliable long distance. Or try looking at http://www.abelltolls.com

As far as cell phone service goes, most of them are expensive ripoffs IMO, except VirginMobile.

I have an HP laptop running Windows 7. I aslo have Direct TV where there are shows I like to watch. But being there are only 2 receivers in the house and 5 to 6 other people who use these 2 recievers. My windows media center shows the reciever and has a tab that I can access recorded shows, but there is no way for me to access the shows. Does anyone know how I can get recorded shows from my direct tv reciever to my laptop?

Nagesh answers:

Use a device like this: http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=10025010&d=elgato-10025010-game-capture-hd-game-recorder-(10025010)

Ken asks…

Do i have to get a converter box with Direct TV satellite?

Do i have to get a converter box with Direct TV satellite. I have a older TV, but there is completely nothing wrong with it and I do not have the money to get a new one. I have read the government postings and still dont quite understand whats going on.

Thanks in advance.

Nagesh answers:

If you get your signals via satellite, you will not need a converter box. Converter boxes are needed for people with older TVs who use rabbit ears and similar antennae for over-the-air analog free broadcast TV.

If you have cable, satellite, or fiber optics pay TV, you will still have a working TV after the change.

I’ve added below the government’s FAQ page about the conversion to all-digital signals.

How do I connect my new home theatre system to my Direct TV?

I have Direct TV and I bought a home theater system with a built in DVD player. Do I hook it up to the Direct TV box and if so, how do I do it? I’ve connected all the speakers but I don’t know what goes where to get it hooked up to the Tv and Direct TV box. Thank you!

Nagesh answers:

It should have a two prong that says audio out you plug a red and white sound cord in and then to your reciever and your sound runs from your surround sound speakers
