Your Questions About Directions

Linda asks…

What is a column of wind with currents going in multiple directions called?

What is a column of wind with currents going in multiple directions called? And what would it be called if the currents were counter-spinning?

Nagesh answers:

A column of wind with currents going in multiple directions called a VORTEX.

If ‘counter’ means counter-clockwise, then the vortex would be called a ‘cyclone.’
It’s called a ‘cyclone’ because the column rotates the same ‘counter-clockwise’ way the earth rotates, which is called ‘cyclonic.’

Betty asks…

What would happen if a spaceship pilot forgets directions after reaching space?

what would happen say, if a spaceship pilot reaches moon but then forgets directions how to get back to earth. Instead he flies in wrong directions. What is his chance of returning back to earth through guesswork of directions?

For example on road if a motorist forgets directions, he roams around but eventually making u-turns and following signs he gets back to the right place.

Can that be done in space too for spaceship pilot?

Nagesh answers:

It’s not possible. You’re limiting your thinking to earth thinking where we have horizons and buildings and trees and mountains that block our view and distort our sense of direction. Basically in space, you have the astronaut telling Mission Control where he is at given intervals. His job is to confirm the path that the planners at Mission Control have layed out for him months in advance. The real guidance is done by hundreds of earthlings at Mission Control. They’re constantly checking the location and speed of the spacecraft at all times. An astronaut cannot get lost in space. The reason the guidance is done on earth is to save space and weight on the spacecraft, and to keep the astronaut from getting overworked.

How long can you leave Directions white toner on for?

I’ve just put directions white toner on and it says to leave on for 15 minutes, but my hair’s quite yellow so I’m leaving it on longer than that (I have done before and it was fine) but how long can I leave it on for? Would it be okay to sleep with it on with it not really being a dye as such?

Nagesh answers:

Yep, the same with directions dyes themselves – they are safe to leave on for long periods of time. Just make sure you condition your hair well the next day and ensure all of the product is out.

Mandy asks…

A strong man can withstand the force exerted by two horses pulling in opposite directions. How would the tensi?

A strong man can withstand the force exerted by two horses pulling in opposite directions. How would the tension compare if only one horse pulled and the left rope were tied to a tree? How would the tension compare if the two horses pulled in the same direction, with the left rope tied to the tree?

Nagesh answers:

Agreeing with Dawn, and add a tiny example:

in the 1 horse against wall situation, we assume your horse pulls with force F. Now the person doesn’t move, means the forces acting on him are fully balanced and total to zero. Which means that the wall pulls your strong man in the opposite direction with the same force -F (negative sign for direction). If you now replace the wall by another horse – nothing changes! He still doesn’t move, and the forces are still balanced, each in opposite directions and same magnitude.
