If you have encryption (such as WPA) set up on your wireless network, you’ll need to plug your bridge into a wired connection first to enter the security settings in order for it to access your wireless home network. Just follow the installation wizard or quick setup instructions that are included with your Wi-Fi Ethernet bridge.
Two examples of Wi-Fi Ethernet bridges are the D-Link DGL-3420 Wireless 108AG Gaming Adapter and the SMC SMCWEBT-G EZ Connect g Wireless Ethernet Bridge.
Not all Wi-Fi Ethernet bridges support WPA encryption. If you’re using WPA on your wireless home network, make sure you choose a Wi-Fi Ethernet bridge that supports WPA.
If you happen to have a wired Ethernet connection (CAT 5e or CAT 6 cable running into a wall outlet where you’re setting up your console), you can just plug the console into the network with an Ethernet patch cable. Just choose the “wired” instead of “wireless” option when setting up a wireless connection. If your console is a Nintendo Wii, you’ll have to buy Nintendo’s Wii LAN Adapter and plug that into a USB port on your Wii to make an Ethernet connection.

I think its depends a great deal on the computer it is plugged into. If you have a below average computer without enough memory, quality suffers.

Of course, even with a high end pc, you can’t be downloading a movie or MP3 files at the same time and expect to hear a “crystal clear signal”. LOL

I would check out that above web site for a good primer, install screen previews, tips, videos, trouble-shooting, etc. There are also links to discount promo codes too, but many if not most have expired now. I did see one had a 64% success rate now (higher than what site says).

RAM is probably a major issue (or could be). I have 2 gigs on my desktop and my laptop, so I’m in good shape there. I’ll bet many of the people who complain have an old, slow, cheap or spyware-filled computer. It’s like there’s NO WAY it could possibly be the fault of their own computer, it HAS to be the Magic Jack is a piece of junk. Right! LOL

As far as the technology, I think it’s VERY well-designed! If you have a problem, you can update with the MagicFix software and that will probably fix it. When it’s working right, I tend to just leave it alone and not do any updates. In general, the software is getting better steadily.

I have XP, so I don’t know about Vista (which can complicate things).

Assuming that you have an above average pc and a good connection (not cheaper slow-poke broadband often priced low with introductory packages), you should give it a try for yourself. Just return it if you aren’t happy or give it to someone as a gift if they have what’s needed.

Follow ALL the advice on that site and you will probably LOVE it like most do!

I noticed some new laptops coming out with 4 gigs of RAM installed, so that’s raising the bar on what the average power pc is now. Heck, the operating system often wants about a gig all by itself these days.

If you have less than 512 Megs of RAM, forget it OR upgrade your pc to at least 1 gig. That will make every program on your computer run better and it will be more reliable. Get rid of ALL your spyware. Adware and scumware too as well.

First of all, I do not claim anywhere that Magic Jack “works perfectly” for anyone, much less everyone. Only time the word perfect is mentioned anywhere is a tip that others said a Uniden phone sounded perfect. Your distortion – not mine.

Second, when you mention a “complete inability to connect at all” it should be pretty obvious that com ports are getting blocked. You didn’t say you made sure its needed ports are unblocked. If you did, you probably would have stated this. If not, try that! I am trying to help inform users which ports need to be open!

Third, I don’t doubt you may be the “computer guru in the neighborhood” (good for you). But most people would trust the opinion of test engineers at PC Magazine who gave the Magic Jack their respected Editor’s Choice award – more than yours.

Did you actually take a good look at this site? There are lots of tips to help people (such as yourself evidently) who have had trouble getting the Magic Jack to work. Just because you were unable to do so doesn’t mean the product is junk!

Last, please refrain from giving my MJ replies more down arrows. OK? It just makes you look like an “I know it all kid”. I was probably online before you were born (or still using diapers maybe?). Ads on the site are there to help recover the expenses of running it.

Hehe! The guy told u that so u dont start downloading every game possible. The truth is u can download ANYTHING from games, to movies to music and pics. AND programs
MAKE SURE that u tell ur dad to HAVE A GOOD anti virus protection program before u start downloading stuff, that way u never get viruses.

UPDATE: and downloading is NOT 100% illegal.
WHAT ABOUT the PAID games from online, much like THE SIMS, u dont HAVE to buy them at the store, u can very easy PAY and download them on ur computer, along with hundreds of other LEGALLY PAID for games.
There are lots of KNOWN WEBSITES that give u the otion to PAY for an online download.
