John asks…
Does anyone have the Sharper Image U Video Camera?
My son wants a Flip Mino for Xmas but I just saw this at JC Penney for 1/2 price off of the Sharper Image price. Just wondering if it is comparable?
Nagesh answers:
It is somewhat comparable, but the specs are still not clear. Unfortunately the product isn’t reviewed pretty much anywhere right now. Some sites say it comes with software included, some sites don’t say at all. None of the sites that discuss it tell what the software might actually do. But despite all that, for the 50 price tag it seems worth it. You can always download the free Movie Maker add on from Microsoft (if it didn’t come with your current computer and you are running XP or higher) and use that to edit the videos. The video will also only record standard def. So keep that in mind. And there is no word on whether the memory is expandable. And just so you know Bed Bath and Beyond is currently selling this product for the JC Penny “door-buster” price if you don’t want to wait (in-store and online).
A word about the Mino…
I currently own a Flip Mino and would highly recommend their products. I’ve made numerous videos with their video recorder and built in editing software. And another plus is they have accessories for the camera available on their website (which the Sharper Image U Video doesn’t have). You can also buy HD Flip recorders if that interests you (if you want to spend the extra cash that is). And if you are a Sam’s Club member they did have a great deal on the Mino (although supplies were running low) on their website.
Final word…
I would highly recommend the Flip Mino and all of their products as I have used them quite a bit. And they make and sell their own accessories for their cameras (plus they are PC and Mac compatible).
I cannot recommend or tell you not to buy the U Video camera because I have never used it and the actual specs are so hard to track down. However the price point of the U VIdeo is attractive and if you can track one down in store (of your local Bed Bath and Beyond… I know mine has it) it may be worth a purchase so you can demo it before hand or possibly purchase more than one (Why not at that price? Could make a good gift).
All-in-all I think it really comes down to the age of your child. If they are young I probably wouldn’t drop a ton on the camera in which case the U Video should be great. If they are an older teenager (or even older) they might appreciate the features and accessories of the Flip products even more.
Hope this helps.
Laura asks…
Do you think that in 10 or 15 years it will be completely normal for most people to have HD? etc?
I know quiet alot of people already do but in a while do you think that everyone will? Like, you wouldnt even concider buying regular? Just like dvds and video tape.
Do you think people will have everything HD?
-TV
-digital TV package
-Blue Ray disk movies (/HD DVD)
-computer screens
-games consoles
etc
Nagesh answers:
Yes, pretty much.
HDTV is already essentially won. Given the February shut-down of analog, all TVs still made are digital-capable even if they’re not HD. This makes the incremental cost for HD of some sort (even if it’s not full 1080p) cheaper, so it’s only on the bargain basement TVs you won’t get HD. Already, it’s virtually impossible to buy a larger screen TV that’s standard definition only.
With the advent of HDTV adoption, I supect cable and satellite makers will phase out their SD hardware. They may stil charge extra for HD content, but they probably won’t bother selling both kinds of receivers five years from now.
Blu-Ray discs will remain a high end option for awhile, but they’ll eventually trickle down, just as other DVD features like progressive output and then upconversion have. Within a few years, you’ll see Blu-Ray in every DVD player over $100, and eventually, in most every DVD player. DVDs will probably still be sold, just as LPs and CDs, or VHS and DVD, coexisted for awhile. There’s nothing pushing DVDs to be phased out, but the demand for new titles on DVD will eventually diminsh.
Most computer screens are already HD… Even tiny laptops are usually at least 720p resolution (I have a 10.4″ laptop sitting next to me, two upgrades old, which has a 720p screen). I have dual 1200p monitors at home, which is currently a bit pricey, but already 1050p monitors are sub-$200. So I’d claim that we’re pretty much there already for PCs.
Game consoles… Nintendo says “no”, Sony and Microsoft have been HD for years, with the PS3 and the X-Box 360.
Camcorders are going HD very quickly… There’s already a Blu-Ray camcorder, there are numerous units that do HDV (tape) and HD onto disc or memory card. I have two myself, and one is nearly three years old. This will eventually take over the consumer market, simply because all HD camcorders are also SD camcorders. So as the price difference vanishes, there will be no reason to make SD camcorders anymore. In fact, this was accelerated in the camcorder market, because consumers demanded still-mode photos that didn’t stink. So even SD camcorders have had multi-megapixel sensors for awhile, ‘cept the very cheapest ones. And today, a 2Mpixel sensor (what you need for 1080p) is old-fashioned in the camera world, not exotic. So the cost difference is already crumbling.
Online video will take more time, largely due to storage costs and network speeds. Today’s music downloads are tiny, SD video is moderate, but Blu-Ray quality HD would be huge, and bring most ISPs to their knees. If an HD version of AppleTV, or HD to the iPod, or something similar, really catches on, you may find ISPs restricting downloads (in fact, they see this coming and they’re already talking about it publically). But like most things, bandwidth will improve (well, ‘cept at my house, where I can only get wireless broadband) and eventually video downloads will be largely HD too.
Then, of course, all of us VideoHead types will be buying those new for 2017 4K FED or OLED TVs (4K = 4000×2000 pixels), and eight layer Blu-Ray, or UltraDisc or Holographic disc (HVD), and wondering how anyone can still watch HDTV.

Betty asks…
Online video streaming- Downloads completely before i can watch it?
When I used to watch streaming videos online the video would download about say 3%, then let me watch and once it got to 4%, it would buffer and wait a little. Now I can’t watch the video until the whole thing has downloaded, which is incredibily annoying when watching only 5 seconds of something will tell me if i should keep watching it.
Does anyone know what might of changed or how i can fix this problem so that i watch a streaming video whilist it is still downloading/loading
Nagesh answers:
Ok you have a few issues that might be happening to your computer. My first guess is..do you have a good Anti-Virus program and a program to monitor spyware, malware and hijackers?
Either way my answer should help you…I will suggest things and you can decide if you computer is equip or not…so just ignore some suggestions I might mention if your computer is up-to-date.
1st issue..your computer is slower and videos need to buffer more. Download this free program to free your resources…
Run it daily or whenever you feel your computer is running slow or acting up…
Http://download.cnet.com/Glary-Utilities/3000-2094_4-10508531.html?tag=contentMain;contentAux
Its called Glary utilities and it will monitor your computer for speed and such. Just click on the Download Now button to install the free software. Hopefully after that you will never experience that problem again. You should regain your computer speed for streaming videos.
If you don’t have an Anti-Virus program, download and run this free one…If you do have an Anti-virus skip this one and move onto downloading stream videos 🙂
Select the “Download Now” button…not the click to download button
on the banner.

and run the program.
OK Buffering sucks for most of us…we can only watch videos as fast as the slowest computer…you may be watching a video from a computer (server) that is older then your computer. How to fix this?
Download the video you are trying to stream…how?..very simple if you know how and its free. I watch streaming movies and TV shows from sites that offer multible streaming sites. You will notice some are DIVX or Flash or Videoweed, Wisevideo and Loombo. Just keep in mind this will not work with DIVX files unless they are flash files….
1. First program is download the free RealPlayerSP at http://www.real.com/
When you start to stream the video..notice the “Download Video” showing at the top right of the video…this will save the movie to your hard-drive to watch later without any buffering issues. Sometimes this program may time out before the video completely saves.
2. Second download this free program called Orbit at http://www.orbitdownloader.com/
When you begin streaming the video you will see a download icon appearing beside your mouse..simply click to begin the download to watch the movie a another time…you can close the streaming shows after the downloads begin to speed your computer up.
Cheers
Daniel asks…
Can anyone recommend a good website for watching online movies?
Nagesh answers:
Amazon.com has video on demand on a rental license basis or download-and-own.
The internet archive has old movies available to watch/download in various formats at no charge.
Classic cinema online rotates their selections and shows really good films from time to time.
Someone has already recommended Netflix (pay service). No one mentioned poor Blockbuster – they have a video on demand service, too.
Enjoy.
