Nancy asks…
Is it possible to sync an iPod with more than one PC?
I have my laptop at home and also my work PC. They’re not on the same network and every time I plug my iPod into work, I get the option to transfer purchases. Is it possible to have the iPod sync’ed with 2 machines and not loose any content?
Nagesh answers:
Officially NO..
The ipod is designed to work with and be the slave to itunes on the computer to which its paired. Each iPod can only be paired to ONE computer at a time but each computer can have up to 255 ipods on the same library/Account.. The Computer /iTunes is the MASTER and its the files on the computer that must be backed up if you formats your computer or corrupt the disk then unless you backed up your itunes folder on the PC you have lost everything!!
If you do not pair a ipod to a computer you cannot alter its settings.(settings are altered in itunes with the ipod attached its settings summary page appears once plugged in and that’s where you alter the settings for THAT ipod only.
You CAN Transfer PAID music and apps by logging into your itunes store account and authorising your computer (via the store menu) BEFORE plugging in the ipod then selecting Transfer purchases from the pop-up or the File Menu. However this will ONLY transfer BOUGHT music and APPS and not the imported stuff
If you pair your ipod to a new computer it overwrites what’s on it. (say yes to the Pair with these computer message)
Simply dragging music onto an ipod does NOT make that music playable it then acts as hard disk. To make the music playable you MUST use itunes to sync with it as only itunes can put the music files in the correct file names (not the same as on the computer) in hidden folders and create the hidden indexes for them to be playable.
When you pair the ipod to a computer it erases ALL the previous library and tracks and replaces it with what the current computer want it to.
If you want to erase the ipod you select RESTORE from the ipod’s tab in itunes then it re formats and re installs the ipods firmware resetting everything to default values and removing the lock (except for the touch which asks for the code to allow this)
the ipod needing a master player to sync with is NOT unique to apple Creative, Zune, Sony al have one of one sort or another.
Why do people assume that the ipod is a music backup system – its NOT!
The iPhone and Pod touch do NOT have disk mode so drag and drop and non apple utilities don’t work (use itunes> Transfer Purchases or iPhone Exploreer {it does work on the ipod as well).
The Master files are on the computer in the itunes library and you really need to back these up directly or copy them onto the new PC its in”My DocumentsMy MusiciTunes”

The ipod is a SLAVE device to ONE itunes only although itunes can have many ipods. When you PAIR an iPod with a computer it erases all songs on it!!! And deletes pairing with original computer.
Sharing Copyrighted material such as Movies or Music is also illegal!
You cannot transfer music from an ipod to itunes as Itunes is the MASTER location of the music files. If you NEED to transfer music from your ipod to the computer as you have lost the original you need a 3rd party application (I use Yamipod for mac and ipod classic but iPhone explorer for the Touch models) but a whole range can be found on www.versiontracker.com and enter ipod transfer in the search box under your operating system.
Music transfer programs will ONLY work with MUSIC and NOT iPod touch apps.. You will need to download these again but once you have bought an app re-downloading it is also free no matter how much the original app cost!
I suggest copying the contents of the “iTunes Music” folder on your old computer onto the new one by USB hard disk, USB Flash memory or DVD-r
once you have the utility installed run it and close itunes! Connect the ipod (if itunes starts up and asks if you want to pair say NO and close itunes again). Then with the utility transfer the songs from the ipod to your hard disk.
Then disconnect the ipod, START itunes… Drop the files you have just transferred onto the itunes Library and once the files have been copied into the library you can delete the originals (NEVER MOVE or touch the itunes folder on your computer otherwise you will lose the music let itunes manage it for you).
Now reconnect the ipod and when it asks pair say YES and it will transfer the music to your computer.
If doing this with 2 computers you have to do this on both!!

Using Limewire, Kazza or ANY OTHER peer-to-peer (P2P) programs to illegally steal music, software and movies etc. Without paying for it, is one of the leading causes of virus and spyware infections. Many downloads using P2P file-sharing programs are loaded with malware
LIMEWIRE IS NOT A WEBSITE.
You will be downloading “stuff” from unknown stranger’s computers while they will be uploading from your computer at the same time. You do not download from any website.
It is amazing that people who would never accept and eat a sandwich from a stranger, don’t think twice about downloading a file to their PC from a perfect stranger, who lives half-way around the World!
If you don’t know the difference between a .wmp (good) file from a .wmf (potentially very bad) file or a .zip from a .pif, then stay away from Limewire, Kazaa, and all P2P programs. The same is true if you don’t know the difference between a song that is 25kb in size from one that is 3 mb in size. The smaller one is probably a Trojan, just waiting for you to infect your computer with.
P2P file-sharing is no place for computer novices. Even experienced expert users get infected using P2P at times.
If you must use P2P, always scan every file you download with both your anti-virus and your anti-spyware before you open it.
………………
And don’t forget the legality issues.
Using Limewire or any other P2P file sharing program such as Kaaza or Bearshare, (free or paid) to share any copyrighted music, movies, software etc. In illegal in the USA.
It is fairly rare, but people do get sued and fined for using these P2P programs. Such as this 12 year old girl here:

Susan asks…
What do you think of shopping on the Internet?
I want to know your opionions. Is it safe? Is it easy?
Nagesh answers:
As long as the site u are with has a lock at the bottom of the explorer (internet explorer) or if u are using something else to browse the internet.
Most of the time if it says http”s”:// the “S” stands for secure.
I have a habit of sometimes drinking then looking for old movies, like “the legend of billie jean” among some books, songs,. Etc., anything that sparks my fancy, online.
Ive bought a pair of shoes off of Ebay that they dont sell anymore in stores, so long as it has the “S” ure good.
Ive even ordered things off the walmart and target pages. As long as u have a good anti virus program and dont surf the web much for icky stuffs (you know what i mean), really, ure safe.
If u get emails n such that say they require u to update ur info, (sometimes i get things from bank of america, wells fargo, etc.), anything that ASKS for info, usually in an email, dont do it, call the company first.. Plan and simple….
I cant tell ya how many times ive called companies to tell them i have recieved a phony email. A secure “httpS” site, etc, will NOT ask u to input ur info….unless u are buying.
Ebay, amazon, sites like that, or any other site for that matter that u purchase things from DOES NOT ask u to repeat ur info.. I ALWAYS turn those fake sites in. (fake sites are those that have an http address that does not involve the address (microsoft, or take u to a ip address, like 75.68.112. Whatever, arent good.
I actually just got an error on a site that told me to download something for windows media, u CANT click on the LINKS usually, and it said MICROSOFT made it.
I called them for no reason other than to tell them the site, it linked me to, was fake, ecause i knew it wasnt them, the ADDRESS did not invovle the www.microsoft.com address…
Buying online is great!!! Dont let it detour u. Bascially, IF YOU ARENT SURE DONT DO IT!
If u do come across something feel free to ask me ill tell ya…
