Your Questions About Direct Buy

Paul asks…

What is the real story behind Direct Buy and DirectBuy.com? How much does it cost to join?

We need to purchase an extensive amount of furniture, and were intrigued by this program.

They have a ‘free 30 day trial’ in which you can buy up to $1,000 worth of furniture, but beyond that, the details on their commercials and website are sketchy, at best.

Anyone ever dealt with Direct Buy?
How much is it?
Is it really worth it?

Thank you.

We actually just went there yesterday for a “tour”. They say you can save tons of money by buying direct from the manufactures, but they only tell you at the end of the 2-hours that you have spend there that to do that you need to pay $7000 upfront! For me it’s too much. I think – and what most people say – unless you buy ridiculous amounts of furniture/clothes/what-not, it’s not really worth it. Plus, they don’t have anything in stock, so you just rely on the pics and the descriptions of the catalogue. Another catch is that you have to tell them by the end of the 2-hour tour if you want to buy the membership and pay $3500 to $7000 (depending on the membership type you want) or you want just to walk away, but then you are banned from DB for 7 years. Or you can try it for a month for free and then buy membership, but of you decide not to – again, banned! For me one more drawback was that there are no financing available for the merch, so if you want to buy a complete set of bedroom furniture and it costs $5000 you have to pay it on spot, vs regular store, where it is possible to finance it,say, for a year. For me all that – plus pricy membership – is just too much!!

Joseph asks…

How do I purchase from Direct Buy without taking up membership?

I saw a beautiful living room set I want to purchase at Direct Buy website, the thing is they want me to come to some orientation with my fiance just to even answer the question regarding the furniture. Is there another place where I can purchase the same furniture they have or even a list of the merchants they use.

Nagesh answers:

Direct Buy will not tell you anything and want you to pay $5000 to join. Save your money..just start looking at local furniture stores for the set or one similar to it..it might take you a while, but you will find it or a better one for less money. They will not give you a list of wholesalers they deal with..but other stores have the same merchandise.

George asks…

Does anyone have a direct buy account I can use to buy some furniture?

I live in Houston Texas and there is a direct buy outlet here but the 5000 to join re defeats the purpose of what I am trying to do, I didn’t want to place a large order. Does someone want to share their account?

James asks…

Has anyone joined direct buy and what is the cost of membership.?

We are thinking of remodeling the kitchen and are wondering about the cost of joining direct buy and its advantages.

Nagesh answers:

Search Yahoo answers for others who have asked this question… It costs anywhere from 5-15,000 dollars and it’s a complete scam.

Nancy asks…

Is it worth getting a Direct Buy membership and Why?

I just bought a house and saw a lot of furniture that I like from Direct Buy, but I’m not sure if its worth it to get the membership or just find the furniture else where.

Nagesh answers:

I don’t know if its “worth it”.

Direct Buy is the latest corporate name for this company. If I remember correctly, it used to be called “Buyers Advantage”.

I interviewed a former accountant from that company and he told me it bordered on a scam. High pressure sales tactics, extended delivery dates & prices that were not that great. He said unless you are buying the most high end appliances or furniture, most people never saved as much money as they spent on the membership. So I might be biased.

In Michigan, the (worthless) State Attorney General, has looked into the company because of complaints from members about substitution of products and delivery on pre-paid merchandise that was taking 12-18 months. However, because it is considered a private club and buried in your membership agreement is the clubs rights to do just these things, they are not breaking the law.

In the case of Direct Buy memberships, it is definitely Buyer Beware. Because furniture sales are way down right now, your best bet may be to visit 3 or 4 of your close Furniture stores and see how cheap you can get the items you want. Make them an offer, you may be surprised at the discount you can receive without buying a membership.
