Joseph asks…

Downloading songs illegally if there is no where to purchase it?

As someone who has eclectic taste in music it’s always frustrating when I find a song or album I like that is not available on itunes or any other digital music purchasing site. This is usually with older songs or lesser known cd’s that stopped being produced when the music industry moved towards digital technology. Like soundtracks of old movies for example, but not old enough to be public domain.

The only way I can see a way of legally obtaining the music is by buying a cd through amazon or some obscure collector’s shop. I like to support the artists whose work I enjoy, and that’s why I don’t support downloading illegally. Still, in this indirect way of getting songs I wouldn’t even be supporting the artist, but someone else who probably supported the artist a long time ago. I wouldn’t be taking their money because they aren’t making any. And with my craving for music this just makes it really tempting to download them off the net.

Thing is, I have the money to pay for the music, but obviously I don’t have the money to pay for pirating fines (who does).

What are the risks of downloading songs illegally like that? And what would you do?

Nagesh answers:

“Still, in this indirect way of getting songs I wouldn’t even be supporting the artist”

Compared to music downloading, you are. When music is downloaded, you’re not just getting a copy of the song, you’re actually increasing the number of copies available. The uploader becomes a kind of publisher. It can be argued that for obscure artists, freely disseminating their work is a great way to spread awareness of it. All things being equal, the two would easily balance each other – downloading hurts sales minimally for the same reason that popular interest would be minimally changed – because it’s obscure. However, all things are NOT equal for obscure music – downloading would likely be done mostly (if not entirely) by people who know those acts and are most likely to pay for them.

“with my craving for music this just makes it really tempting to download them off the net. ”

I find it difficult to believe that music available in peer-share or torrents isn’t also available for streaming on sites like youtube. The point is, broadband internet has made streaming a decent alternative to straight downloads – allowing people to satisfy their craving w/o downloading.

“What are the risks of downloading songs illegally like that?”

Peer-share and torrents require installation of client software (which can contain malware); they’ve also got a bad rep for poorly filtering out fake files (also a malware threat). Copyright trolls can track your downloads to your IP address and subpoena your ISP. If your ISP gets enough complaints about you they can throtltle your connection if not cut it out completely, and that may be separate from what the copyright troll lawyers will do.

Those are the risks – likelihood is different.

Carol asks…

Should it have good quality if I watch movie through laptop?

I usually watch movies through pc. I download movies in torrents which actually had a good quality in the monitor of the pc. Now I‘m planning to buy a 2nd hand laptop which I will tranfer movies on it. I think laptop’s screen is a bit bigger than the monitor of the pc. Can it have a better quality if it is on the laptop ?

Nagesh answers:

The quality depends more upon the print (resolution quality) of the downloaded files than on the screen difference. The quality on the laptop screen will remain the same, except the viewing angle needs to be adjusted (especially in case of older ones).

Chris asks…

Is it bad karma if i illegally download movies?

I want to be involved in the movie industry when I‘m older. If I illegally download movies will it bring bad karma to me when I‘m older and make me not make it in the movie industry? I can‘t afford to buy any of these movies.

Nagesh answers:

Downloading movies illegally is theft. Ask yourself what kind of a person you want to be: someone who works hard, respects other people’s property and makes it in the movie industry or a pathetic thief who makes it in the movie industry.
