my eight year old sister really like those movies and i was planning on buying the dvds, but cannot find them. I checked amazon, circuit city and block buster. Or is there a way we can watch it online either way would be good. thank you

Nagesh answers:

If you wouldn’t mind watching it on your computer, download the free version of Limeware. Any movie I was ever interested in has always been there, even new releases. Can’t beat free movies.

William asks…

What specs do I need to look for in a basic but usable laptop?

I need it to run xp, be compatible with comcast high speed cable internet, be wireless compatible…

I will be using it to write papers for school and do work online…I can’t afford anything fancy…please let me know what to look for.

Nagesh answers:

All these requirements are basic right out of the box. My wife’s 10 year old laptop (Dell 4600 with 512MB RAM) can run Windows XP, plus connect to our Wireless router that connects to AT&T for Internet access.

1. If you want to connect directly to the Comcast cable, you will need an Ethernet port or adapter in the laptop. Otherwise a external wireless adapter, or internal wireless (802.11b/g/n) adapter and wireless router at home. You can pickup an USB adapter at the office supply store for around $40-50 later.

2. 512 MB of RAM minimum for Windows XP, more makes it run faster, but you can often upgrade later on. I added a single 512 chip when I realized it was running too slow for word processing.

3. Largest hard drive you can afford. Laptop hard drives are virtually impossible to upgrade. If you are planning on using a digital camera or downloading large files (MP3s, movies, etc.) I’d recommend at least 40GB, but larger if possible. (Also #5, cd burner).

4. Centrino for wireless is great because you don’t have an external antanea hanging off the computer.

5. CD or DVD burner. This will allow for a local backup of your files. Hate to lose that term paper because the only copy was on your laptop, which just crashed down the stairs in the library. Backup regularly. You can get an external CD burner later on, but it is cheap to get one now.

6. Carry case. Get something to protect your laptop. Otherwise the incident with the library stairs might come true.

Lastly think of weight. A large 17″ laptop screen is going to mean additional weight. 5lbs is still 5lbs at the end of the day, now it’s with your books, notebooks and everything else.. Ugh.

I’d suggest Dell’s Refurbished machines as they often come ready to go and a warantee to boot.

Daniel asks…

What are your thoughts on the American road? Is it part of the American national identity? And why/why not?

I’m currently writing my master’s thesis on the road in the US. I want to explore its mythical status with roots back to the first settlers and the ‘frontier thesis’ (how the American was moulded on the frontier). I also plan on looking at Route 66 and explain how it has added to the myth of the road. Finally, I intend to look at road movies and explain how they keep the myth of the road alive.
I’m not from the US myself, and therefore I’m interested in getting in touch with ‘real’ Americans who would like to share their thoughts on the road with me. Is the road still mythical? Why/why not? Have you ever been on a road trip – or do you intend to go? What does the road symbolize to you (both the road in general and Route 66)? Do you think the road is part of the American national identity? Or only the whites’ identity? Is it possible to find personal identity on the road as portrayed in many road movies? Please explain to me what the road means to you as a person and a people. Thanks

Nagesh answers:

Sounds like an interesting thesis. I am 38, Hispanic, and male. I was born in Texas, but since my father was in the military, lived in many different states and in Europe.

IMO, there is something mythical about the American road. When on the road, the sheer vastness of “America” leads one to think anything is possible, that there is always a possibility of starting over. It also instills a sense of wonder, or at least curiosity about what may lay just around the corner. I do not think this is unique only to whites.

I have taken many a road trip and there is something to the whole “self discovery on a road trip” thing. On a road trip, people are forced to sit together in a small space and experience changing geography, culture, etc together. It induces introspection and instant dialogue.

I personally, feel melancholy when taking road trips, now. I do see the road as symbolizing the American identity, and it is unfortunately dissappearing. I hate to drop a loaded word like globalization into this, but the road is not what it was when I would take to it with my grandparents as a little boy. You now see more dried up communities, less mom and pop stores, and unfortunately more uniformity. The kid working the counter at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, is now online downloading 50 Cent songs. We’re more connected and now more alike. There’s less mystery, less to inspire our imagination.

I hope this helps.

In response to Jack’s answer, Americans do choose the fastes route, that get me there yesterday pragmatism has been a driving aspect of a our culture, but I think that many Americans would tell you that the move from the old “road” to interstates lined with McDonald’s and Jack in the Box, is one that IS lamented. Americans DO connect the road with the American past. Of course I imagine the age of the American you ask will have a lot to do with their answer. With all due respect I think Jack can study and read about Americans, but he cannot give the definitive American response. There are many.

What Do You Think About the New Xbox Experience?

Dicuss!

I like the new look, the avatars aren’t that bad (more clothes options would be nice). I love installing my games on my hard drive. Although you still need the disk, its so much more quieter to play [since it doesnt need to use the fan as hard] and the loading times are incredibly fast!

Nagesh answers:

When I first heard there was going to be an update that basically turns the 360 into the ultimate media center I was excited. Now that I have it it’s a lot of fluff. We heard we could rip games to our hard drive, you can but you have to have the disk in the machine to play it?? What’s the point?? Now people have a reason to buy the big hard drives. You could download movies to the 360 before and now with netflix you can stream them but if you’ve ever seen the selection you know it’s a rip off, plus Sony Studios blocked all their movies because of the PS3. So the selection will be even less. I’m a 28 year old male not a 14 year old japanese girl, why in the hell do I care about creating an avatar? I’m sorry I loved the xbox consoles because they didn’t have all the useless extra crap like the Wii.

Microsoft leave the social networking to facebook and myspace, I bought a 360 for the games not to talk with my friends online as we share music and ideas on how to make our avatars uber sweet. (By the way that was sarcasm I don’t say the word uber) I wouldn’t mind the update so much if Microsoft didn’t make it mandatory, if they would have just given every user the choice to update that would have made me happy. Now I have this POS dashboard that I’m going to dread navigating every time I want to go download a demo.

I have a bachelors degree in marketing, been out of college for 5 years, spent the first 3 in sales and the past 2 in market research. I guarantee this dashboard was created by some marketing genius for the sole purpose of generating sales not improving the gamer experience as it has been billed. Just look at the amount of things that you can purchase now than what you could before on the old dashboard. OK I’m done ranting 🙂 If you enjoy it more power to you, it does look pretty I’ll give you that. But I’m just telling it like it see it.
