Charles asks…
Which laptop should i choose? battery life vs. performance?
I am trying to decide between 2 laptops. The first is the Acer Aspire Timeline 4810t-8480. It is a 14 inch 16:9 widescreen laptop, with an emphasis on thin, light, and high battery life, thanks to a power saving single core processor (1.4 Ghz CULV SU3500) it gets 8 hours of battery life. It weighs 4.2 pounds, is less than 1 inch thick and The laptop has a DVD burner, 4GB of ram, a 320 GB HDD, HDMI out and 802.11n networking. I purchased the computer for $550 (which is the very highest amount i can afford to pay for any laptop)
The second laptop (which is really a placeholder for any of a dozen laptops with the same spec sheet and overall profile) is the Gateway NV5214u. It is a 15.6 inch 16:9 widescreen laptop that costs $500 and it doesnt have any stand out features, but it has every feature i would like a laptop to have on the hardware front. It does have an actual dual core processor (AMD 2.1Ghz) a DVD burner 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, HDMI and 802.11n networking. It weighs a shade under 7 pounds, is like 1.7 inches thick and has a battery life of 3 hours 30 minutes in good conditions.
So, it comes down to which one to keep, i have both unopened (stupid return policies mean i cant open them and test them for myself) sitting in my house. I assume people will ask about my usage to make a good recommendation, so i will say i am a heavy multitasker of light applications. that means i do lots of web browsing (firefox, many tabs) while listening to music and word processing. Occasionally i do some video/music compression, but because i do so many videos/songs at the same time, i usually save those for overnight jobs. Less than 1 time every 6 months i will do some very light video editing. I also like to download movies from torrent sites then watch them on my HDTV (thus HDMI is a must) or watch streams of shows on my TV (like top gear on BBC.)
Basically, the main reason i havnt chosen the lighter laptop with better battery life is the single core processor. the chipset has HD and MPEG acceleration built in, which should handle watching movies via HDMI, but im worried its just not going to be fast enough. at the same time, i really dont want to settle for a laptop that is the same as the one im replacing it with (my current laptop is a 2 year old gateway with crummy battery life as well.) has anyone had experience with either of these laptops in everyday situations? im really torn here…
Should have mentioned, i do play the occasional game or 2 (though they are games i can play with my current laptop with Intel GMA900, and both of my prospects FAR exceed that capability) and download songs from time to time. also, i do burn DVDs from time to time as well (though just like with audio/video compression, i usually do those when im not actually at the computer, though sometimes i will be there)
oh yeah… not to be nitpicky, but detail in explanation is everything to me, so give some reasons for your recommendations if you can
Nagesh answers:
No experience with either, but I would suggest you keep the Acer. Your description of “multitask[ing] of light application” isn’t intensive at all – multiple browsers/tabs + music/word is still a piece of cake for the single core. Video/music compression will definitely take a hit, but if you do those overnight its not an issue.
As for HDMI streaming, the Gateway will be better, but the Acer should be able to handle it as well. A bigger factor to improve this is a discrete graphics card. Since both lack this, your performance is capped either way.
I would favor the higher battery life/greater mobility over the Gateway’s dual core here as your usage isn’t especially heavy. It might come in handy on any trips/vacations when you’ll want to lug your laptop around.

Linda asks…
Why is my Internet usage so high?
Okay, so I have Cogeco internet and it’s served me well since I switched over from Bell (which is horrible). My monthly download/upload cannot exceed 80gb or my dad gets a $1.50 charge per gig exceeded. We haven’t went over the limit since I stopped downloading movies excessively. But last month, we went over 20 gig over. I’m not sure how, we have a desktop, a laptop, a wii, 2 Xbox’s, 2 iPhone’s and an iPod touch. On one day it says we downloaded 20 gig worth of things. I checked my download folder on the laptop and desktop and there wasn’t even a download on that day. The Wii is mostly used for Netflix, and one of the Xbox’s doesn’t get used often, while the other (mine) is used quite frequently. I realize Netflix takes up bandwidth (about 250mb an hour) but that wouldn’t make up 20gb. I have a wireless router for the Xbox’s, Wii, and laptop, but they are all on a secure wi-fi connection that is mostly random numbers with some letters thrown in (capitalized and non-capitalized). Upon calling Cogeco, they just believe our wi-fi was compromised. However, my street is mostly older people who don’t even own computers, and by trying this myself, the wi-fi wont reach the end of my street. I am unsure as to how this would happen. I only download updates on the Xbox’s and Wii, and watch Netflix, but not to the point where it’s an all day thing. I only download apps on the iPhone’s and iPod. I monitor my downloads on my pc and laptop. and like I said, nothing was downloaded one day and we got 20gb download. I would understand if it was upload because I would assume it was a torrent left open. But that is not the case. Please help 🙁
In an additional note, it is August 20th and our limit was just reached again yesterday, when we have barely downloaded anything all month, a few songs and apps, plus watched Netflix.
Nagesh answers:
If they are saying your wi-fi is compromise, then most likely you should change the wi-fi password, it is the only sure fire way to fix problem this but make sure its WPA encryption though:http://netsecurity.about.com/od/secureyourwifinetwork/a/How-To-Change-Your-Wireless-Routers-Admin-Password.htm
And also scan all your computers for viruses, and put this:http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html use the boot scan feature on all your computers its a great program and it works good. Sometimes malware will automatically use your computer as a file sharing server via some hacker.
Also make sure your not inadvertently seeding torrents on your torrent client, you have to left click them and click stop to completely stop them otherwise as soon as they finish downloading they usually start seeding (theres a way to disable that: http://www.ehow.com/how_6939772_stop-utorrent-sharing.html)
And I also reccomend you use bittorent or utorrent or don’t use them at all.
Also an Xbox average when gaming, live uses 30 MB every hour and that + 250MB and hour from netflix, but thats only if it has a low definition like 480p, the more HD you get the higher that amount will be at most 2 GB and hour streaming! . Also do you realize you use bandwith (download/upload) every time you load a webpage? And if it involves streaming and videos (like youtube) it uses even more.
You should also disable all the auto-update features on your computers, because they may update when your not looking and start downloading things.
All in all, with all your web connected devices I wouldn’t doubt you actually are going over the limit, and with all those devices I would convince your dad to get a better ISP, because honestly it will be very easy to go over that limit.
Also I agree with another answer saying to get a network monitoring service like these:http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-free-network-monitoring-tools/1342
and also that Hootech program is quite good as well.

Why Isn’t HollyWood Attacking China On Piracy?
china is by far the biggest thief of movies music games and software on earth! they have turned stealing other peoples property into a multi billion dollar industry. “Piracy” is when you sell something that isnt yours for a profit, without compensating the creator. and china is doing this on a daily basis!
Why isn’t Hollywood Upset and demanding action against the rampant theft of their property on a massive scale perpetrated by the government of china?
SOPA / PIPA. is like barricading yourself inside your home and letting the criminal rule the streets. it does nothing. it wont stop the content from being shared!
WHY? you say. because the internet was created for SHARING!
tell Washington to take action against china! and not put a 12 year old in jail for downloading 6 songs from a p2p site, or send an 85 year old grandmother to jail for one song!
@Jimmy *ding* *ding* *ding* we have a winner!!!
but its no reason to go after children and old women, and make them examples like in old Soviet Russia
Nagesh answers:
Hollywood has tried to get China to go after its pirates. However piracy is so entrenched there, it’s literally one of China’s largest industries.
As originally written, SOPA was going to give the corporations the ability to tell the government to shut off access to a site at will. This even more egregious abuse of the constitution has been removed but still doesn’t hide the fact that SOPA is little more than a blatant attempt by the corporations to take over the internet and turn the government into little more than their private security force.
No it won’t do anything to curb piracy. In fact the only effects will be to drive the entire internet and tech industry OUT of the US, along with millions of high paying jobs. You think the economy sucks now? Just wait…
