Your Questions About Directions

Sandra asks…

How can I get travel directions using MAPQUEST?

When I attempt to get travel directions, I enter the start and end locations and click on “get directions.”
What happens is the start location disappears and only the end location appears with no travel directions. When I click on “get directions” again, the end location disappears and the start location appears without any directions.

How, then , can I RETAIN both start and end locations so that I can get the travel directions?

Nagesh answers:

Hi, i just tried using mapquest and it worked for me, it’s probably just another mapquest glitch. Have you tried closing down the site and then reloading it? Or you could use http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl google maps…..i have found their directions better than mapquest anyways. Good luck.

Linda asks…

How can I get good biking directions online?

I was wondering say I want to go from on place to another in the city. By car driving directions, you would have to pass bridges and high ways where bikes are not allowed. How can one get directions to go from one location to another with biking directions?

Nagesh answers:

If you are in a country not covered by mapquest, try maps.google.com and select directions to be “walking” rather than “by car”. It will take highway speeds out of the the algorithm to find the best route, although it will still only account for road directions mostly (ie. Dedicated bike/walking paths may not be included).

Michael asks…

How do you know which directions to capitalize?

I don’t know which ones to capitalize. Like “The northwestern part of my state is fairly flat.” Directions like north, south, northeast, etc. Please help me.

Nagesh answers:

When it’s just a direction–no caps. (as above); when using as a proper noun–then cap. For ex: The South was devastated in the Civil War. Or such a “North Korea” (its a name).

David asks…

Would these be good replacement behaviors for an autistic boy who refuses to do work and follow directions?

1. Completes an assignment without refusing to do it.
2. Follows directions the first time they are given.

Nagesh answers:

Their good goals for him to aim for.

However they would probably be more long than short term ones.

If you are writing up an IEP or something similar you might want to look at steps that could lead to those.

For instance
Short term goals (1) this is what number step you are working on
1, Do a part (say 1/4) of an assignment after 3 requests.
2. Follow directions the third time they are given.

You can then move up the amount of times you request him to do something.

Some things you may want to look at in regard to making the requests are
1. Have you actually got his attention – if you haven’t then of course he’s going to ignore them (even “normal” kids do this)
2. Are you making the requests in a way he can understand – are you using the communication form which he is most able to use receptively, are you making it clear what you want him to do
3. Is there a reason that he is refusing – is he busy with something else, is the work to hard for him, does he actually know how to do what you’re asking him to do.
