Haha I had been in fact searching for the exact same thing last week.. The above is the entry to Smokin’ Guns, a Quake 3 mod that runs as a standalone game. It is a Wild West mod where you play as characters from classic movies, like Clint Eastwood, or Annie Oakley, or Lee Van Cleef, or a Mexican with a big sombrero, etc etc.

If you have a Mac OS X, GarageBand comes with it and you can get hundreds of plug-ins (AU or VST) free online.

You can upgrade or try out demo versions of Soundtrack or Logic Express or Logic Pro. With these programs, you can record real instruments into your computer and then you can add drums, instrumental, etc.

You can also sync-edit soundtracks to your movies with any of the above programs.

If you happen to have access to Mac OS 9 (old computer), you can still get Pro Tools for free online. You can get Pro Tools free for Windows 95 (or something older like that) as well.

You cannot get plug-ins for Pro Tools though for free.

You can also download Audacity for free for any platform at audacity.sourceforge.net.

As for Cubase, that’s prosumer/professional level. A friend of mine who mixes as a hobby uses Cubase and upgraded from the demo version to the real thing because he couldn’t stand the limitations of the demo. Cakewalk is another program. I don’t really know about all that stuff these days since they’re so hard to get a hold of (for free).

I don’t know anything about Windows computers or what you can do with them. Ads for PCs say you can do anything on Windows, but I’ve yet to see what, exactly, since the ads are, like usual, vague and incoherent.
