David asks…
Do I really have to erase everything on my ipod?
My old computer recently died and so I bought a new one. I purchased a movie from the itunes store and when I tried to upload it to my ipod, it said that because the ipod is set to recognize my old computer, in order to upload the new movie, every existing movie on my ipod would be deleted. I don’t want them all deleted, re-downloading everything would be a long and very annoying process. Is there anything I can do?

In fact, once you’ve put the songs or video on iPod or iPhone, you can get them out of iPod or iPhone and put them on computer. If the songs are puchased from iTunes. You can easily transfer them to iTunes or computer by clicking “Transfer purchase”. If your stuff are downloaded from other website. You can transfer them to computer with iPod transfer. How can I transfer songs on my iPhone to my computer?
I have 2 computers and the one I use often crashed, so I want to transfer all of the music on my iPhone to my other computer. Please help ):

The ipod is designed to work with and be the slave to itunes on the computer to which its paired. Each iPod can only be paired to ONE computer at a time but each computer can have up to 255 ipods on the same library/Account.. The Computer /iTunes is the MASTER and its the files on the computer that must be backed up if you formats your computer or corrupt the disk then unless you backed up your itunes folder on the PC you have lost everything!!
If you do not pair a ipod to a computer you cannot alter its settings.(settings are altered in itunes with the ipod attached its settings summary page appears once plugged in and that’s where you alter the settings for THAT ipod only.
You CAN Transfer PAID music and apps by logging into your itunes store account and authorising your computer (via the store menu) BEFORE plugging in the ipod then selecting Transfer purchases from the pop-up or the File Menu. However this will ONLY transfer BOUGHT music and APPS and not the imported stuff
If you pair your ipod to a new computer it overwrites what’s on it. (say yes to the Pair with these computer message)
Simply dragging music onto an ipod does NOT make that music playable it then acts as hard disk. To make the music playable you MUST use itunes to sync with it as only itunes can put the music files in the correct file names (not the same as on the computer) in hidden folders and create the hidden indexes for them to be playable.
When you pair the ipod to a computer it erases ALL the previous library and tracks and replaces it with what the current computer want it to.
If you want to erase the ipod you select RESTORE from the ipod’s tab in itunes then it re formats and re installs the ipods firmware resetting everything to default values and removing the lock (except for the touch which asks for the code to allow this)
the ipod needing a master player to sync with is NOT unique to apple Creative, Zune, Sony al have one of one sort or another.
Why do people assume that the ipod is a music backup system – its NOT!
The iPhone and Pod touch do NOT have disk mode so drag and drop and non apple utilities don’t work (use itunes> Transfer Purchases or iPhone Exploreer {it does work on the ipod as well).
The Master files are on the computer in the itunes library and you really need to back these up directly or copy them onto the new PC its in”My DocumentsMy MusiciTunes”

The ipod is a SLAVE device to ONE itunes only although itunes can have many ipods. When you PAIR an iPod with a computer it erases all songs on it!!! And deletes pairing with original computer.
Sharing Copyrighted material such as Movies or Music is also illegal!
You cannot transfer music from an ipod to itunes as Itunes is the MASTER location of the music files. If you NEED to transfer music from your ipod to the computer as you have lost the original you need a 3rd party application (I use Yamipod for mac and ipod classic but iPhone explorer for the Touch models) but a whole range can be found on www.versiontracker.com and enter ipod transfer in the search box under your operating system.
Music transfer programs will ONLY work with MUSIC and NOT iPod touch apps.. You will need to download these again but once you have bought an app re-downloading it is also free no matter how much the original app cost!
I suggest copying the contents of the “iTunes Music” folder on your old computer onto the new one by USB hard disk, USB Flash memory or DVD-r
once you have the utility installed run it and close itunes! Connect the ipod (if itunes starts up and asks if you want to pair say NO and close itunes again). Then with the utility transfer the songs from the ipod to your hard disk.
Then disconnect the ipod, START itunes… Drop the files you have just transferred onto the itunes Library and once the files have been copied into the library you can delete the originals (NEVER MOVE or touch the itunes folder on your computer otherwise you will lose the music let itunes manage it for you).
Now reconnect the ipod and when it asks pair say YES and it will transfer the music to your computer.
If doing this with 2 computers you have to do this on both!!
