Plus their is nothing childish about the 3DS at all.

So You should get the 3DS.

Because you can play music (even with the system close).

It depends on what kind of tablet you buy. If you buy him an IPad you can just connect it to wi-fi but,the ones you buy from the cell phone stores would require you to pay a monthly fee.
