Jenny asks…

Can you go down to a Blockbuster store and rent a movie still?

Hey, I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I don’t really rent movies and now so many people are doing the thing with having movies mailed to them. Can I still just go down there and get something to watch? I want a movie for tonight, so I’m not interested in anyone mailing me anything. Also, how much does it cost now? I’m only 24, but I know this question is so dumb I sound old.

Nagesh answers:

Yeah, you can still go to Blockbuster and rent movies

They have the blockbuster total access online, where you can rent movies and have them mailed to you.

They also have a new feature online where you can download movies.

The last time I been to Blockbuster prices for new releases were
$3.95

Games are like $7.99
Older movies (favorites) are $1.99

William asks…

What happens in the second half of Love Actually?!?

I downloaded the movie online, but didn’t realize it was only the first half. Can somebody please give me a detailed summary of everything that happens after Sarah and Karl come home from the dance to the very end? I’d really appreciate it!

Nagesh answers:

Love Actually (2003)

Set almost entirely in London, England during five frantic weeks before Christmas follows a web-like pattern of inter-related, loosely related and unrelated stories of a dozen or more various individuals with their love lives, or lack of them. The central character is the new bachelor prime minister David who cannot express his growing feelings for his new personal assistant Natalie. The prime minister’s older sister Karen slowly grows aware of her husband Harry’s flirtation with an office worker named Mia. Karen’s friend Daniel is a recently widowed writer whose 11-year-old son asks for love advice about a girl he has a crush on. Meanwhile, Jamie is another writer who leaves his girlfriend after catching her cheating on him and travels to France to write a novel where he pursues a possible romance with his non-English speaking Portuguese maid Aurelia. Also, Harry’s American secretary Sarah questions a romance she pursues with the office hunk Karl, but her personal family problems get in the way. Other secondary characters involve a photographer who pursues his best friend’s new wife Juliet; a pair of movie stand-ins, named John and Judy, who grow closer after their simulated love scenes; a libidinous chum who wants to travel to Wisconsin, USA to score with women; and a burned-out former rock star named Billy Mack who is the main connection between all stories involved.

Donna asks…

What are the best sources for streaming entainment both paid and free?

I am thinking of cancelling our tv service due to the exorbant cost and the little that we want it for anyway. However, that being said, we would still like access to mainstream tv shows and movies. Is it possible to watch current season entertainment? What about sports? What is the quality of the broadcast? Anything else relevant that you can think of?

Thanks!

Nagesh answers:

Quality on any of this is based on your internet speed. Here’s the benefits of all that I know, and I’m currently a netflix subscriber for the last year or so, I did a trial on hulu, but I dropped them because of technical issues & commercials

Netflix: Has the largest library of online streaming. They have nothing new, but you can watch back episodes of some nifty shows (law & order svu is one of my favs) Their auto adjusting settings is a better match for slower connections, you rarely experience a buffer break, and no commercials.

Hulu: New stuff, current seasons & commercials, usually 4 per episode you watch. I used them on my ps3, which the software kept booting me out of the psn, freezing my console and there were buffer breaks, the auto setting is far less sophisticated.

Amazon Prime: Never tried, but I hear they have the smallest library and it’s nothing worth watching, but you get free shipping all year so that’s a plus.

Other things to keep in mind, since we have the ps3 we use it for downloading content from the playstation store, so we’re able to get 3d content (enourmous files) and not have to worry about buffering or quality issues. There’s also the vudu ap, which is a walmart program where you can stream current new release movies, it’s not as cheap as a redbox, but same as a traditional movie store. Then of course, there’s the ever so popular torrents. Illegal copies of new releases downloaded off sites like bearshare, limewire, frostwire and so on.

So generally speaking. If you want new stuff, and have good speed (and don’t mind commercials) go for hulu. If you’re a movie guy, or don’t mind older content then netflix is for you. And i dunno bout amazon, they havent’ tempted me enough to try.
