why might illigal downloading of movies raise the price of legal veiwing of movies?

If those producing the movies don’t make money from doing so, why would they do it? They make movies to make a profit. If the movies are downloaded illegally, they make no profit. No profit, no movies.
That’s not to say that they don’t already make a lot of profit, I really don’t know. But I do know that for Tom Cruise or Julia Roberts to make 20 million dollars for one movie is obscene.
