would it be legal if i wanted to watch an HD movie on my tv but did not want to buy a blu ray player, so bought a blu ray disk which i could not play but then downloaded the movie online in a format i can play through my xbox 360? (do not tell me stuff like i will not be caught downloading stuff because i know i probably wont but i want to be a good boy 🙂 )
its not about downloading – my point is that surely if you own a movie and the right to watch the movie and you have supported the creators by giving them money – you can watch it any way you want.

Probably. When you bought your Blu Ray you essentially only purchased the license to use your movie (hence you can’t make copies of “your” movie and give them to your friends). Downloading a hot copy of a movie is still illegal, even if you own it.
Also, the very reason you wanted to do this is to avoid buying a Blu Ray player. This is cutting Blu Ray (or whatever company that has the copyright of the technology) out of profits it would have otherwise made on the sale of the player you would have purchased to play your movie. Situations like this are the reason why piracy laws were put into place. This system is obnoxious, expensive, and ethically questionable, but that’s the cold hard truth of it.
