Mary asks…
Verizon fios or direct tv?
Nagesh answers:
I’ve had almost every cable and satellite provider throughout my life so far and I currently have fios so I will tell you my feelings.
Directv is good if you live somewhere where it does not rain and have bad weather often. If you get dense cloud coverage and bad storms you are going to loose signal from time to time which will get annoying.
The prices on Directv are good on sign up, but once the special offer is up prices can be high.
Customer service isn’t the best, but from what I’ve heard since I’ve had it was it has improved some.
Fios to me is great. I have never lost signal because of it being fiber optic to the house. Internet is fast and always reliable.
There are some cons to fios from others experiences. I personally have never experienced any of things, but will mention them.
People do complain that they have had billing issues before and had a hard time getting it fixed. People do complain about the poor customer service and wait times for it.
One thing with fios is you have to make sure whoever installs it knows what they are doing.
If they do it right you shouldn’t have issues. The same goes with Directv other then the weather issues.
Fios can be cheaper or more expensive all depending on where you live. They do offer bonus perks if you renew contracts when they expire if you have a contract. I received a $400 gift card for resigning. Fios does also offer a no contract service in a lot of places now which is great. Thats how I got service…..which no contract. After 2 years I went into one for the $400 prepaid card bonus because I was and am happy with fios. I pay the same as if I were paying for cable.
Picture on fios is amazing.
I honestly would never go back to Directv after having fios.
My advice is to compare prices and channel packages and take into consideration if you live in an area prone to bad weather. If so go with fios, if not and the prices beat fios go with directv.
Look at all of the hidden fees for things such as set top boxes. Directv says they’ll give you 4 free set top boxes, but you’ll end up paying for those in the long run. Directv will give you movie channels free for 3 months, but after that you pay full price. Fios had an offer for all movie channels for 50% off for a year. If you do the math the fios offer is a smarter offer.
If you are a football fan Directv’s NFL Sunday Ticket is great. Fios had NFL Redzone, but its nothing compared to Sunday Ticket.
Directv is running a special 2 year price deal right now which looks great. Usually it’s only for 1 year.
If you go with fios sign up online. Do not call and order by phone. There’s been a lot of stories about their service reps. Not giving customers what they ordered. Do it online and have a paper trail.
If I had to choose 1 or the other fios would be it just based on no signal loss. I’ve had it for about 3 years now and have never lost signal even when my neighbor who has Directv and my other neighbor who has cable has lost signal during bad storms.
Linda asks…
how do i program my direct TV remote to work with my TV?
The TV is a Westinghouse TV. None of the codes work that they have except one but it programs the remote wrong. Now the channel button is the actually volume button and the mute button turns off the TV. is there any way to program it right besides using codes.
Nagesh answers:
Hi,
Your best bet would be to either call direct TV customer service and ask them to give you the remote code for your TV model or you can google the following:
“program direct TV remote for”
and at the end put your tv make and model.
There are a lot of sites that have instructions and codes you can find fairly easily if you have a universal remote.

Jenny asks…
Dish or Direct TV?
I’m so confused! Right now we have cable, but they just jacked up our rates, because our one year is up.
We’re moving into a new house, and I was wondering if we should try Dish or Direct TV.
Which do you think is better?
I know that Direct TV says it doesn’t charge me for local channels, but I have to pay $9.99/month extra just to get the channels listed in blue, because they’re HD? A lot of these channels are the ones I want, too, like Comedy Central, Food Network, CNN….
Nagesh answers:
I say Dish Network…I’ve had both. Dish does carge like $5.00 for local channels but I’ve never had trouble with them like I did Direct TV. My dish has never went down, there’s never been trouble with pay per views, and for 100 channels with what you want its like 30 plus the 5, for 250 channels its like 50, and they give rebates for paying on time, every once in awhile they give you free pay per views, and each month they have free channel offers, you can upgrade, downgrade whenever you want with the push of a button or online and the customer service people have always been great.
John asks…
Which cable tv company is better- Direct TV or Comcast?
I had Comcast cable tv, but am thinking of switching over to Direct tv.
Which cable service is better? Are they about equal in variety of channels and cost?
Nagesh answers:
Direct tv is not cable tv it is satellite.
Difference being a cable tv provider is primarily terrestrial land based transmission, while satellite is primarily via satellites.
Different technology and different services and programming packages.
Of the 2 I much prefer DTV over crook cast
They have better customer service, less expensive packages, and more HDTV channels…
If you like sports DTV has the clear edge, the only case com cast would be better is if you needed internet through them.
