Jay, your parents would need to call customer service to troubleshoot the dual tuners. The DirecTV DVR should allow you to record one and watch another, you are correct. But somewhere along the line your receiver isn’t getting the second line to allow that.
You can also see about jarring it into working, though, if you are comfortable with electronics and cabling. I can’t guarantee it will work, but sometimes it does.
First, make sure that you have to SAT-IN cables plugged it (they’re the one that would come from the dish, usually through the wall). Very rarely you would have one, and if there’s just one I would leave it to the Tech Support agents to determine if you have a special installation.
If you have both cables, though, try unplugging the receiver from the power outlet, and then unplugging both SAT-IN cables. Leave it that way for about 30 seconds, then plug in JUST THE POWER OUTLET. Wait for it to load (depending on the type of receiver you have, this can take anywhere from 1-5 minutes). It should get to a screen that should have the programming and says Searching For Satellite Signal (771) in the blue box on the bottom. Plug the SAT-IN cables back in and check to see if it will then record two shows at once.
Sometimes this will get the receiver to work correctly. Sometimes it won’t though. Other problems could be that one of the cables is damaged, loose, or even too long. Another cause (very rare, but it does happen) could be that the receiver’s second tuner isn’t working properly.

Anyone have DirectTV Cable service?
What do you think of The Direct TV cable service? I am skeptical ordering Satellite cable, but it’s the cheapest to Time Warner at the moment. I am wondering what happens after the year? I know its a two year contract, and everything sounds great during that first year, but what happens during the second year? What are the bad things about Satellite cable?
Nagesh answers:
No, but I have Direct TV satellite tv. You can check out current prices and specials here:
http://www.sathookup.com/directv.php
Currently after the first year promo price, the $26/mo discount goes away. Directv equipment is better than cable, and even without the new customer discount, it is still slightly cheaper than cable and you get more for your money. Tax is even cheaper as there is no city tax – no cable lines underground to tax on.

Direct tv contract termination?
I have recently moved and and have suspended my account w. Directv. After an arduous search to find a place that best suits my needs, ie. location, amenities, and general quality of life, I found what I was looking for. One small problem or $340 problem…. The building is wired for cable and the landlord doesn’t want a dish on her property. I was told by Directv’s customer service months ago( not like anything they have told me has held water to this point in my contract) I could cancel free of charge if they did not offer service to the area or if the new property owner did not want D-tv equipment on the building.
I have signed a lease agreement and in it I have agreed to use the cable / Internet provided. I don’t mind not using D-tv as my provider, and feel mis- led in having to pay $340 to terminate my contract.
What consumer rights do I have, if any as I feel violated, as I have every month after signing up for a service which in my opinion uses devious tactics at best. Is there any legal recourse or a way to work my way up the corporate food chain to terminate my service amicably.

First did you get anything in writing from D TV? If not than that is typical of big Corps. Many times Customer Service of these big guys says things they cannot fulfill. Next to let you know if you have a balcony you can still have the D TV service in your apt. I have even seen these stand in front of apts. On the lawns. I have them also but I don’t have a contract with them. My suggestion is File a complaint with the FCC and also the BBB regarding their failure to honor their word that if the property will not allow satellite to be installed you would not be charged the balance of the contract. I have also listed Direct TV Customer Agreement so you can check it out to see what it says about moving commitment.
Look over the last link as it says that D TV needs consent from land lord so that in itself should release you from any contact since the landlord won’t consent. Good Luck

Do I need Direct TV HD service to watch things in HD on direct tv?
ok so i have direct tv and a hdtv i went to best buy today and the guy said to watch tv in hd all i need is a direct v hd receiver and i will get all my normal channels in hd. the hd service thats $10/month is only for premiun channels i guess. the only reason i ask is cause direct tv wanted alot of money to upgrade to it they said i had to buy 4 new hd recievers and i only have 2 hd tvs. i’d appreciate any advice
Nagesh answers:
Yes. I had to do the same thing with dish network. First thing they do is upgrade your box and satellite. Then The satellite has to be turned in the direction in order for you to receive the HD programming. Thats the way the package deal works. Direct tv is kinda high priced. I used to have it then switched because times are hard now. My mom and I are preferred customers and have been with dishnetwork for a long time. We did get the discounted upgrade and saved some money on our bill. I mean we were given 2 boxes, but we have three tvs. 2 operate independently off of one box. Then I have mine in my room.
