Your Questions About Directx

Thomas asks…

Do I need to buy a directX 11 video card to experience directX11?

I just got Windows 7 64bit for my PC and I have a 8800gts graphics card. I know that Windows 7 has directx 11 but will I see directx 11 in my graphics card? or do i have to purchase a directx11 card? Is directx 11 from software for example Nvidia Drivers? or hardware or both? I updated to the latest Nvidia drivers already.

To answer the question up top- Yes. You DO need a DX11 video card to experience DX11.

DirectX is a programming language made by Microsoft. The hardware that supports DirectX is programmed specifically for features from a certain DX release. For example- I have an nVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 and an nVIDIA GeForce 5200 FX currently in my system. The former, the GF4, only has the capabilites of a DX8 card, with no pixel shader support or the like. The GF5200 has ‘DirectX 9 Programmable’ pixel shader 3.0 support. DirectX features are hard-coded into the cards, allowing only effects from a certain version of DX.

As to seeing it in your card, your card is a DirectX 10 card, meaning although your software version of DX is going to be 11, only features of DX10 are going to be possible.

So, and if I may be blunt, No. You’re not going to experience DX11’s features on your current card.
But, to be honest, I’d also like to say that there isn’t really a need to upgrade to a DX11 card. Yet. DX11 cards right now are in their basic stages and haven’t really reached high-performance that most gamers would like.

James asks…

How do I get the latest directx download?

I currently have DirectX 11…. But I heard 11.1 is out but I can’t find anywhere to download it. I have DX11 but whenever I download the updater it says I have the latest version… WTF?

Btw, I have windows 8, so I should be able to download it.
I said I have DX11! It says it in the system info!

Nagesh answers:

DirectX 11.1 comes with Windows 8 so you don’t need to do anything.

Edit: Yes, I know is says DirectX 11 but it’s actually 11.1.

Questions about Directx 11 and graphics card upgrade?

I have an NVIDIA 8500gt and was planning of buying 9800gt. Then I heard of DX11. Should I wait for DX11 cards? Will they be very costly compared to the present cards? Will DX11 run on the 9800gt?

I frankly dont know what directx is though I know it’s something that runs games. So please post an answer appropriate for me.

Nagesh answers:

Directx 11 is already out, and it works with Vista and 7. The Nvidia 9800GT is a DX10 card. It does not support DX11’s features, but it’ll still run DX11 games in DX10 mode. The only DX11 cards on the market right now are ATi’s Radeon 5xxx cards. Nvidia’s new DX11 cards are expected out until next year.

I layman’s terms DirectX is a set of instructions/programing that allows developers to make games that will run a wide variety of hardware. Sort or a set of guidelines to make sure that all Windows games are standardized in some respects.
