I have two network connections Mozilla won’t access the network that has internet?
I have two network connections on my PC (MS Xp Pro)
(Connection 1)is connected to shaw cables Motorola SURFboard via USB
(Connection 2)is connected to a Linksys wireless router via cat5 cable. This router is my home network. I don’t have a problem with my home network.
The problem I have is that when I am connected to both networks Mozilla Firefox and Explorer try to access the internet through the second connection.
I get two IP addresses from shaw one is just for my PC through the usb port on the cable modem. The second IP address runs through the ethernet port on the cable modem to the Linksys wireless router to give my home network internet access.
I have used the router settings to block my PC from being able to access the internet through that connection in an attempt to steer Mozilla Firefox and Explorer to use connection 1 (USB) but it did not work.
All that did is let me know when Mozilla Firefox and Explorer were trying to connect through my home network instead of the usb connection.
Now you might be wondering why I bothered setting it up this way and the answer is simple, the usb connection is faster and I do all our downloading with my PC and then use the home network to access the files on other devices such as my wife’s PC, laptop, Xbox 360’s, PS3, Etc.. And I do not want the home network to access the internet through my PC eating up my bandwidth 12 Mbps.
The home network maxes out at about 6 Mbps. And no the home network does not change, it makes no difference if I’m downloading or not still only 6 Mbps.
If any one could please help I would really appreciate it. (disabling and enabling the connections all the time is getting really old)
In response to some of the answers I’ve been getting that were not even answers to my question here is some more info.
My home network is running at 100 Mbps and all computers attached to it are running at 100 Mbps full duplex.
I have two Public IP address assigned by my ISP and was told by my ISP that the cable modem could run both Ethernet and USB simultaneously one IP through each.
Before I setup my home network and got the second IP I was running all my computers off the same router and when one of the kids started playing a game or watching a movie online my download speeds dropped. I called shaw and they recommended running my PC witch is next to the modem from the USB port while leaving the rest on the router through the Ethernet port. They assigned a second IP address to my modem and it has worked great I don’t experience a drop in my download speed and everything has been great until now.
I have a 15 Mbps connection from shaw and I know that cat5 is faster than USB but with the USB I get consistent speed compared to the fluctuating speed with cat5.
I have now created a home network with the other devices in my home and I would like to add my PC into the mix while still keeping my USB connection to the internet separate.
So my question is how can I get Firefox and Explorer to connect to the internet using my USB connection when I have both connections described above enabled and connected.
Connection 1 is for internet Connection 2 is my home network for file sharing.
PLEASE READ BEFORE ANSWERING!!!
THE SPEED IS CONSTANT BUT THE BANDWIDTH FROM MY ISP FLUCTUATES THROUGH THE ETHERNET PORT DEPENDING ON WHO ELSE IN THE HOUSE IS USING IT.
WITH USB MY PC CONSTANTLY GETS THE BIGGER CHUNK.

Ethernet and USB cannot run at the same time, with one Ip address, that would cause a conflict – it won’t work…
Bottom line, Windows (and most OS) use only one path to a given location, so in the case of internet, one path will be chosen by the “binding order” of your network cards (an internal thing), and all internet traffic will use just the one interface.
If you want to use both interfaces, you have to feed them into some firewall (like a Linux firewall), where it acts as a router and delegates the traffic based on rules you define, like all HTTP via one interface, all others (FTP or Torrents) via another interface, regardless of how many PCs you have..
Only a network device can control shared usage os multiple internet interfaces….
If the second interface is local LAN only, you may be able to define ARP table to point all requests to a specific network to go to a second LAN adapter. This means of course, that the second NIC must be running in a totally different subnet….
Speed fluctuating on CAT5? That’s almost impossible – it works at full speed or it does not work at all. You may have some cabling issue, maybe a faulty cable that cuts out once in a while. Or, it’s because you have both interfaces connected – just connect the CAT5 and see if that makes it better. Change the cable to be sure…
You say you got a second IP assigned to the modem? That means that maybe one port is one address, the second port is the other. Do not try to bridge these in one PC, it may cause problems. Keep the networks separate.

John asks…
how fast is AT&T Xtreme DSL 6.0?
Hi everyone, i have the ATT fastaccess DSL Xtreme 6.0 with a 2wire 2701 wireless modem/router.
But over on the ATT site i am confused by the 6MB per second advertisement. Is that REALLY the speed? The old modems were 54mbs so why would DSL be going ‘backwards’ to 6MBS?
Here are the exact words pasted from their DSL page:
“Our FastAccess® DSL Xtreme 6.0 plan is for new or existing AT&T Home Phone customers. With downstream speed up to 100x faster than dial-up, FastAccess® DSL Xtreme 6.0 goes head to head with cable and is a better value in the long run.
Best suited for: home networking, streaming video, online gaming, downloading movies, and sharing photos
Downstream Speed: Up to 6.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 512 Kbps
How can they say their DSL is 100x faster than dialup when it is only 6MBS and the old modems delivered 54MBS?
The reason I am confused is, I bought a wireless router at the store and it says 300MBS. So, why would anyone need a DSL router at 300MBS if the service coming into the house was only 6MBS in the first place?
I want to have a fast wireless modem/router, but am I wasting my money if my incoming service is only 6MBS?
Help me understand, please!
Nagesh answers:
Old dialup modems operated at a maximum speed of 56 Kbps, not Mbps. A router that claims to operate at 300 Mbps means that local computers connected to it can see speeds of 300 Mbps when communicating to each other, not when communicating to the internet. With a DSL connection of 6 Mbps, you can expect download speeds of 600 Kbps. The fastest internet service I can think of in the US right now would be Cable connections running at 50 Mbps. So it doesn’t matter if your router supports 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps, or 600 Mbps, you’re only going to get 6 Mbps. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

The 40 Year-Old Virgin?
Well, I’ve been trying to think of a movie to download, and decided on The 40 Year-Old Virgin. Checked the torrent sites, but the only decent torrent I found made me disconnect every 5 minutes O.o. So, anyway, if anyone has like, a link to either:
A: A torrent for it that’s in avi format, with a suitable number of seeders, that’s NOT by MercifulRelease
or
B: An online version of it, perhaps.
Thanks for any help.
Nagesh answers:
Go rent it from blockbuster.
Save times.
Or go to walmart and get it from the $5 movie bin.

IE8 is a release *candidate*, not a release. Report the bug and go back to using your regular browser.

is weird al yankovic REALLY against…?
Downloading music? i mean i hear his song “don’t download this song”
but it seems to have recollections of frivolous lawsuits such as 7 year old girl sued 3 years after downloading. an old grandma who was sued 6 months after death or something. and tommy chong , thrown into jail for downloading.
and in the song he states ” dont download this song, how else do you think i can buy another solid gold Humvee, these things dont grow on trees”
it seems like he is somewhat AGAINST downloading music online, and more taking the piss out on greedy artists that earn enough doing live shows and money through merchandise , etcetera.
So i wanna know weird al’s actual thoughts on this, does he care ? or he couldnt give a rats ***?
i want to think that he Doesnt care and thinks greedy artists are just a deadbeat ,
*also metallica band member heavily agrees on this. he strongly is against lawsuits due to download / copyright infringement*
*if it was MOVIES, i understand. but music? what the hell.* MC LARS also agrees on this
Nagesh answers:
This is what Weird Al said in an interview 2006:
“I think the record industry is just trying to feel its way around the whole issue right now. And as you could probably tell, the lyrics in that particular song of mine are fairly ambiguous because I don’t really come down hard on either side of the issue. Basically what I feel is I think it’s OK to illegally download music, unless we’re talking about Weird Al Yankovic songs, in which case people should be handcuffed and tortured.
But seriously, I feel like illegal downloading is obviously a major problem for the recording industry and it’s something that the industry needs to deal with, but I think that the RIAA’s reaction to it has been a bit ham-fisted to date, and I don’t think that the criminalization of file sharers is necessarily the bet way to deal with the problem and it’s certainly not the best PR.”
Hope this helps.
