The recent news that DirectX 11 would be revealed this month caused a bit of backlash from some owners of DirectX 10 GPUs, who felt that they’ve hardly had a chance to use their hardware yet. However, Microsoft has revealed that DirectX 11 will be compatible with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as future DirectX 11-specific parts.

At Microsoft’s Gamefest show, the CTO of Microsoft’s Entertainment Business Division, Chris Satchell, revealed that ‘DX11 is totally compatible with DX10. There’s not that 9/10 discontinuity we created before.’ This doesn’t mean that DirectX 10 hardware will only be running DirectX 10 features under DirectX 11, either. According to Shacknews, ‘Microsoft also disclosed that DirectX 11 will add features to existing DirectX 10-compatible hardware.’ After all, once you have a unified shader architecture, your GPU’s processors are no longer locked into the architecture of a specific API.

Satchell also clarified that the next version of DirectX won’t require an operating system upgrade to Windows 7 either, and will work with Windows Vista, as well as ‘future versions of Windows.’

As well as the announcement on hardware-compatibility, Microsoft revealed a few more details of DirectX 11 as well. In addition to the Compute Shader, which allows the GPU to be used for general purpose processing tasks, the new API will introduce multi-threaded resource handling, so that games programmers will find it easier to utilise multi-core CPUs in games. The new API will also support tessellation, which Microsoft claims can make 3D models appear smoother when seen up close.

directx 11 for radeon HD 4670?

im using windows 7 ultimate 32 bit, graphics card radeon hd 4670,

my problem is when i check dxdiag it says im using directx11, i know that my card is not compatible with direxctx 11, now im having problems with some games im playing when cinimatics are supose to play the screen turn black all i get is the audio, is the directx causing this problem? and if it is how can i fix this?
windows 7 comes with directx 11? so there is no way for me to use directx 10.1 on windows 7? is that right?

Nagesh answers:

DXDiag reports you have directx 11 because you have the software installed either through a windows vista update or through windows 7 from default installation. This means your operating system will support that directx version, it does not mean your graphic card is actually that version.

I used to own a Radeon 4670 til it died a month ago, and it is 100% directx 10 not 11.

It has been said however that some directx11 features are supported on directx10 because they are just software features that can be used with DX10 hardware, however for full DX11 support you have to have a DX11 graphic card.

Your graphic card will only use it’s version of directx, you have no need to downgrade from directx 11 to 10.1. Directx 11 will have support for directx 10, 9, 8, etc etc. As will your graphic card, say your radeon 4670 directx 10 players Assassin creed’s 2 which is directx 9 only. It will be backwards compatible and support directx 9 right out of the box without any tweaking.

Donald asks…

Will this complete remove directx?

I uninstall directx useing add/remove programs cause i installed sdk even though i needed directx run time user. So i thought i would uninstall sdk so that i could download the right one, but some musted have went wrong b/c when ever i try to download directx 9 for the run time user it says it is not neccessary.

So, would it be a bad idea for me to go into “Computer” search Directx and then delete everything that pops up? Would this remove any trace of directx left, and allow me to install run time user or will this do nothing and possible hurt my computer?

If you have any other ideas to remove it please share your knowledge

Nagesh answers:

Try with DirectX Eradicator, it will delete all directx components from your system.
