Paul asks…
What is DirectX 9?????????
Well, the title mostly explains it all. I just wanted to know what
DirectX 9 was. I’ve downloaded many PC games and most asked for
DirectX 9 so I’ve never really got to enjoy them =[ Like Halo 2 and GTA
IV. So I just was asking to know what this DirectX 9 thing was. Does
it cost money to get? What is it?? Is it a computer program that I
could get for FREE?(I’m Hoping)
It would be great if you could answer my question. Well in fact,
questionsss would be more like it. Thanks for those who answered.

Direct X 9 (or 10 if you are running Vista) if a free gaming graphic driver available from Microsoft. Your version of windows will come with a version of DirecX pre-installed but it may be an outdated version.
To find out your version of DirectX goto Start>Run and type in “dxdiag” this will tell you the version of direct x you have.
You can download the current version of DirectX from the microsoft web site for FREE.
For xp the current version is 9.0c
For vista it’s 10
For 7 its 11 (beta)
Also most games like halo 3 will come with the current version of directX included in the installation so if your version is not up do date then it will install the current version for you

Robert asks…
.NET vs. DirectX?
What is the difference between using .NET to create some GUI versus using DirectX? Which one is preferred when it comes to creating some simple windows with tabs, text fields, drop down menus and button?
Nagesh answers:
Use DirectX when you want to use graphics, and .NET when you don’t. For the GUI items you’re mentioning, it’s easiest to use .NET.

If you computer came with Windows XP it already has Directx 9.0c as part of the operating system. There was recently a patch that updated Directx 9.0c from microsoft, so you might want to check your Windows Update to see if it has been downloaded properly.
If your laptop came with Windows Vista, it has Directx 10, usually higher versions of directx usually support games requiring previous versions of directx.
Since you are on a laptop, you could be having another issues, insufficient system memory most commonly, Windows XP takes 128mgs just to run the operating system, Vista takes 512mgs. If you only have 128-512mgs installed you might not have enough left over to run the game after you take out what is needed for the operating system, all other programs that start in the background at start up, and because you are on a laptop, your graphics processor shares it’s memory from the system resources as well, thus not having enough system memory could be an issue.
The game calls for 256mgs of system memory in XP, minimum specs call for 32mgs of video memory. Recommended specs call for 512mgs of system memory and 128mgs of video graphics memory on a dedicated card (not shared resources from an onboard card). So basically if your laptop isn’t running at least 1 gig of system memory, this could be your problem. Only really high end laptops have built in video cards with dedicated graphics memory, but you can possibly still play your game with onboard graphics provided you have enough available system memory to compensate.
