Your Questions About Directx

A question about DirectX?

Hello.
I have a few questions I want to ask about DirectX. Firstly what exactly does directx do?
DirectX 9.0c hasn’t been updated since, well, November 07; and since directX10 is now out for Vista, which I won’t get due to Vista being unstable with most of the games I currently play, I highly doubt updates will be created for DirectX9.0c; correct me if I’m wrong though: I’d love to be in the acknowledge about updates. Anyway, I used to use Omega Drives, but since then I’ve lost updates for it and I’m unsure where to stand; literally speaking. Anyhow does anyone know of any good, reliable and safe drivers? I mean, does anyone know of any trustworthy application of any sort for an XP?

Nagesh answers:

DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms.
DirectX helps fast rendering of high-quality 3D Graphics.
9.0c won’t get optimizations unless they are needed, that’s why there hasn’t been any updates since November ’07.
Simply get the official drivers for your Graphics Card. The latest drivers are mostly the best for your card, not always, but mostly.
Vista is stable, it’s just heavy, thus requiring higher quality components, however, you mean drivers for Vista are unstable. Yes, maybe, but at the current state, they work fine.

David asks…

ActiveX vs DirectX?

what is the difference in these 2 things? I tried downloading ActiveX but a popup comes up saying microsoft security will not allow me to download this am I better off with DirectX from the microsoft website?

Nagesh answers:

ActiveX is for certain little programs on the Internet that require ActiveX control to be installed to run. DirectX all it’s for is to upgrade your multimedia equipment like for your Sound and Video. DirectX is more or less used for 3D games mostly. So based on what your wanting to do here if your trying to run a program on the Internet that requires ActiveX control to be installed then you will have to install the ActiveX control or program before the program on the internet will run. If your playing intense 3D games for example Doom 3 or anything that has good graphics like Doom 3 the I would upgrade your DirectX. The latest version of DirectX is DirectX 9.0C which can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com. If your needing ActiveX control then you will have to click the little Gold Bar that appears in Internet Explorer and tell it to allow or install the ActiveX control. Hope this helps. You can check your DirectX version by going to Start > Run > type in DXDIAG and press enter. Do not change anything in here just look at DirectX version and then exit diagnostics tool.

The Sims 2 DirectX problem?

I just got a new computer and was installing some of my old games on it out of boredom. I installed the sims 2 and when I try to start it, get this error:

Failed to enumerate any DirextX 9 compatible graphics adapters in this system!
Please make sure you have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest manufacturer priovided driver.
The application will now terminate…

I have a GeForce GTS 450 graphics card and the drivers are up-to-date. I checked and it’s actually running DirectX 11. Don’t anyone dare ask or say that my system can’t run the sims 2. I can run Crysis 2 flawlessly so yes, my computer is beefy enough to handle the sims 2. What can I do to fix this problem?

Nagesh answers:

This actually occurred on my old pc, in which I had accidentally deleted some very important files… It’s strange that you would encounter this problem in a new computer…. I myself have a new computer, but it’s worked perfectly fine (save for a few in-game glitches) on it.

No, you don’t need to download a registry cleaner; that wouldn’t even make sense, since your computer is supposedly brand-new and probably didn’t have The Sims 2 in its registry before your attempted installation.

Unfortunately, updating the graphics driver (or buying a new one?) on your computer might be necessary to play The Sims 2 with this error. According to a forum, ” It means it can’t find a compatible or supported graphics adapter [or graphics card]”. That basically means that even with DirectX 11, your graphics card is not compatible with DirectX 9.0c.

Check out the forum for more information about this same topic (and yes, one of the people with this problem also had DirectX 11).

If you figure it out, then Happy Simming.

How to downgrade from Directx 11?

Hi.
I have a NVIDIA 9500 GeForce GT graphics card and Directx 11.
People are saying that DX11 is not compatible with the GeForce 9 series. How can I downgrade to a version that does support my graphics card, like DX10?

Thanks.
I have Windows Vista.

Nagesh answers:

DirectX 11 is backwards compatible with DirectX 10 and 9 so even though you have Directx11 installed whatever application or game you are using will not be affected and use DirectX11. It’s also impossible to uninstall or downgrade from a higher version of DirectX and is beneficial to keep it up to date.

You can always get the latest version here:

Paul asks…

where do you downloade DirectX from?

Where do you download DirectX from and is it free?

Nagesh answers:

Yes DirectX is a free download.
You can download it from microsoft or simply do a search for “DirectX” and you’ll find other links to download it.

If you are running Windows Vista with a compatible graphics card you can install DirectX version 10. Otherwise you will install version 9.
