Acceleration and direction of a proton?
Hey i just need some help with working out this question………
A proton of mass 1.67×10^-27 is fired with a velocity of 100m/s East, into a uniform magnetic field of 30.0T South.
a) What is the magnitude and direction of the force acting on the proton?
b) What is the acceleration of the proton (include direction)?
I have the magnitude of the force and the direction, F = 4.8×10^-16 Downwards and the acceleration is 2.9×10^11m/s^2 but im not sure how i find the direction, any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

A) Direction is down. F = BqV = 30 . 1.6 . 10^–19 . 100 = 4.8 . 10^–16 N
b) a = F/m = 4.8 . 10^–16 / 1.67 . 10^–27 = 2.87 . 10^11 m/s/s
Damn… I should have read the whole thing first.
Use a right hand slap rule. Fingers of right hand point south. Proton ( +ve current ) moves in direction of thumb ( East) and the force is the direction of the open slap…downwards.

what is the direction of the electric current produced by an electron that falls toward the ground? (please explain)

A flow of positive charge gives the same electric current as a flow of negative charges in the opposite direction. Conventional current is positive in the direction of positive moving charges, and negative in the direction of negative moving charges.
In solid metals such as wires, the positive charge carriers are immobile, and only the negatively charged electrons flow. Because the electron carries negative charge, the electron motion in a metal is in the direction opposite to that of conventional (or electric) current.

When solving electrical circuits, the actual direction of current through a specific circuit element is usually unknown. Consequently, each circuit element is assigned a current variable with an arbitrarily chosen reference direction. When the circuit is solved, the circuit element currents may have positive or negative values. A negative value means that the actual direction of current through that circuit element is opposite that of the chosen reference direction. In electronic circuits it is usually assumed that all currents flow to ground. This usually matches conventional current direction, because power rail is positive in most cases.
If electron current flow is considered from – to +, then the current direction is upward. But, your electron is “falling” so it is going from a negative potential to a positive potential and the current flow is in the direction of the electron. The ground in this case, is more positive.
