How is the Direct TV service?
I’m considering getting comcast cable/internet or verizon dsl/direct tv. How does the direct tv service compare to cable. Any problems receiving a signal or anything? It seems to cost about the same as comcast yet you get more channels and free premium channels for the first four months.
Nagesh answers:
I have been a very happy DirecTV customer for eight years now.
It is true there is occasional rain-fade but it is not frequent. Make sure the tech who installs the system gets it pointed real good and that will minimize rain fade.
A buddy of mine has Dish but DirecTV offers more channels per price level.
I had cable at one time but their customer service was horrible.

Direct tv schedule not the same as the shows actually playing?
Many channels say that a certain show is playing but it doesn’t match up to what is actually playing.
Is this problem known? Is Direct tv doing something about it?
Nagesh answers:
It is a known issue, usually relating to a poor signal. Call customer service and they can help you diagnose what’s causing it and how it can be fixed.

What is the marketing term of offering a deal to discourage service cancellation?
Is there a given name for the kind of offer customer service representatives give to customers who are contemplating canceling their current service? (Such as offering a lower monthly rate or throwing in extras to discourage a customer from canceling a cable subscription.)
Nagesh answers:
There are sections in a call center designed to save a client or the proper term would be retention. These callers are the ruthless closers that it is their job to save your business. They will offer you services and close. Most rooms will focus on the incentive and make it a soft sell. I signed up for a credit card at a ball game knowing I shouldn’t qualify, but wanted the gift, and they slammed me with a lower quality card and they were ruthless in trying to keep me there. I had a problem with Direct TV with moving within a year of my installation, they charged me $200, but threw in $200 in incentives to even it out. Cable is cut throat, especially in this economy. Good Luck

How do you adjust a Direct TV satellite?
My picture is ready distorted and half of the channels say searching for satellite. I called the customer service and we did a number of tests over the phone. They said someone needs to come out to reposition the dish and it is going to cost me $50 for them to come out. Does anyone know how to do it so I can maybe do it myself and save the money?
Nagesh answers:
Pretty hard to do on your own. This is a 2-man job. One person needs to be in front of the TV looking at the signal strength. Go into the receivers menu settings to see it. The other person needs to adjust the satellite. You need to communicate while this is going on. So use a cell phone, walkie talkie, or yell really loud. The satellite moves 2 ways – tilt & elevation. Adjust both until you get a strong signal
